Khun Non & Ing Residential

This residential project articulates a dialogue between Mid-century modern and Scandinavian design principles. The composition draws upon the geometric rigor and functional clarity of Mid-century modernism—expressed through clean rectilinear forms, softened curves, and the application of bold Earth tones such as deep green, dark-stained timber, and textured beige surfaces that introduce both depth and warmth into the spatial experience.

In parallel, the Scandinavian ethos is integrated through its emphasis on simplicity, lightness, and the notion of Hygge—a design sensibility that prioritizes comfort, everyday usability, and a sense of well-being.

A central design feature is the multi-functional built-in system, conceived to operate from dual orientations. Within the Living space, the cabinetry simultaneously functions as a partition element to mediate privacy, while incorporating glass block modules favored by the client to preserve transparency and diffuse natural light. The reverse side accommodates shoe storage and display shelving, allowing the element to perform as both a functional apparatus and a feature wall.

Further spatial articulation includes a custom-designed media wall where a curved profile introduces softness into the Living room, and a dining built-in with arched motifs, juxtaposing dark timber with hand-crafted terracotta tiles. The materiality of the tiles—subtly irregular in surface and light reflectivity—enriches the atmosphere with depth, tactility, and dynamic visual qualities.

The kitchen layout responds directly to the client’s culinary practice and passion for hand-drip coffee. A central island anchors the space, establishing both a highly functional workstation and a convivial setting evocative of a café environment.

In contrast, the outdoor kitchen adopts a more playful chromatic palette and tactile strategy—alternating black-and-white tiling with vivid yellow accents and cherry-toned timber countertops—enhancing the sense of vibrancy and informality within the domestic realm.

Overall, the design demonstrates how the integration of modernist geometry, Scandinavian restraint, and material expressiveness can yield a living environment that is at once pragmatic, aesthetically resonant, and deeply personalized to its occupants.
